Introduction To NZ Stamps

I have a soft spot for NZ stamps; it could be because I am from NZ originally. In my post today I am going to give a bit of background and history of New Zealand stamps.

History Of NZ Stamps

NZ issues its first stamps in 18 July 1855, fifteen years after first stamp was issued the penny black. NZ is a young country and this probably explains the slowish start in issuing stamps. The first NZ stamps are known as the Full Face Queens because they picture the head and shoulders of Queen Victoria wearing the clothes from her coronation. The stamps were printed in Britain and had a  value of 1 penny, 2 penny and 1 shilling.
NZ stamps had the first example of advertising on the back of the stamp in 1893. They were stopped because people complained about it being unhealthy to lick the ink. This advertising was on the New Zealand stamps known as the sidefaces. These depicted a side view of Queen Victoria and were the first NZ stamps to be designed in New Zealand and first issued in 1873.

Rare NZ Stamps

The rarest of the New Zealand Stamps is the 1904 Lake Taupo Invert. The picture of Lake Taupo is printed upside down. There is only known to be one that exists. It was discovered by Jack Dennett in 1930 when he was looking through his schoolboy stamp album looking for stamps to sell. It is now owned by the NZ Post Office and is on display at the Te Papa museum and it is unlikely that a stamp collector will ever own it. Let's hope they keep it on display for all to see.
A recent example of rare New Zealand stamps are the stamps known at Maori Kapa Haka stamps, a set of 5 stamps from 2006. These stamps were quickly withdrawn and destroyed when they were described as disgusting and offensive. They depicted the Maori people in caricature and were also described as being culturally insensitive.  Some stamps were sold and still exist and will become more valuable over time.
